What is KC-135 Stratotanker:
KC-135 is a four-engine jet aircraft serving as a flying tanker – an aeroplane used for refuelling other aircraft in the air. It was designed by Boeing and took off for the first time in 1956. Since that time, it has been serving without any breaks in the U.S. Air Force and in several allied countries, including France, Turkey, and Chile.
Although its design is over 60 years old, KC-135 continues to be the foundation of air logistics – thanks to regular upgrades and modifications.
The most important properties of KC-135:
Tanking in the air – the main function of the aircraft is to transfer fuel to other aircraft on flight. Thanks to this, fighters, bombers or transport aircraft may significantly boost their operational range.
Range and flexibility – KC-135 may fly over 2 400 km with a fuel load of 45 tonnes, and its range increases if it does not transport any additional cargo.
Fuel transfer systems – the aeroplane is equipped with a so called „boom”, a telescopic arm controlled by an operator, allowing fast and safe fuel transfer in the air.
Strategic role – KC-135 allows long-range patrol, support, transport, and combat missions. It is a key element contributing to the logistic advantage of NATO forces all over the world.
